The Blackwood Design Awards (BDAs) celebrate innovative new products, technologies and concepts.
The inventions are created to help people with disabilities to live more independent lives. This year the awards were held at the University of Edinburgh on the 15th May. The panel of judges chose their winners from an impressive line-up. The winners included inventions that helped highly paralysed people to create art, provide unobtrusive care for those living with dementia and a device which allows visually impaired people see through the eyes of others.
The entrants to the competition based all over the world were required to give a Dragons Den-style pitch via Skype.
Enayball won the award for ‘Best New Concept’. This is a device that can be attached to a wheelchair and paints the floor as the user moves. The device was designed and created by Brighton University students, Eli Heath and Pete Barr in 2015. Enayball is specially designed to fit all types of wheelchairs and can be used in the home or an artist’s workshop. The judges were impressed and by the community building potential of the device, which would allow artists with disabilities to connect.
